Zaporizhstal: Iron Giant
Zaporizhstal is an enterprise with a full metallurgical cycle, which occupies leading positions in the production of steel in Ukraine. It also engages in export volumes, currency supply, and tax deductions. It is estimated that approximately UAH 3.2 billion were recorded to Ukrainian budget in 2016 by sending to the state treasury tax transfers.
Zaporizhstal works steadily, develops and continues modernization using the contemporary, progressive and environmentally appropriate technologies meeting all world standards and requirements. Thanks to such a modernization and high-quality products Zaporizhstal is considered to be one of the most powerful plants of a full metallurgical cycle.
The design capacities of the factory allow producing about 6.3 million tons of sinter, 4.2 million tons of pig iron, 4.07 million tons of steel, about 3.7 million tons of hot rolled steel, and about 1.2 million tons of cold rolled steel.
The Power of Zaporizhstal
Zaporizhstal manufactures cast iron, steel, sheet products from carbon, low alloy, alloy and stainless steels, bent profile, sheet metal, construction materials and consumer goods. The main consumers of the product are welded tube manufacturers, automobile, agricultural, transport engineering companies, machinery, and metal service centers. Its production is of great importance for Ukrainian engineering and food industry because Zaporizhstal is one of the main suppliers of sheet metal and bent profiles.
Zaporizhstal exports its products to more than 50 countries. Among them are Turkey, Italy, Poland, Russia, Syria, Israel, Bulgaria, Ethiopia, and Nigeria. It is worth to note that the Ukrainian market remains the strategic direction of the marketing policy of the plant.
In 2016, Zaporizhstal produced 3,600,200 tons of pig iron, 3,890,700 tons of steel, and 3,367,900 tons of rolled metal. The unique geographical position gives the enterprise logistical advantages due to proximity to suppliers of raw materials, water, and railways.
As for the quality of its products, Zaporizhstal has undergone a recertification audit on the compliance of hot-rolled products with the requirements of the international standard EN 10025-1 and construction Regulation 305/2011, as well as cold-rolled coil and sheet products with the requirements of the international standard EN 10130.
As a result, the audit confirmed the compliance of Zaporizhstal's management system with the requirements of the international standard. The experts highly appreciated the systematic work aimed at improving the quality of products and the involvement of workers in the processes of continuous improvement.
Zaporozhstal, which is one of the largest metallurgical enterprises in Ukraine, is systematically implementing a comprehensive program for the ecological modernization of production facilities. Since 2012, more than 8.8 billion of "green" investments have been allocated for these purposes. Its ecological projects are highly appreciated by many international organizations that value Zaporizhstal for it eco-orientation.
The largest of the implemented projects allowed to reduce emissions significantly or get rid of them. Such projects encompass a reconstruction of the gas cleaning systems of all six sintering machines at the enterprise's sinter plant. Blast furnaces No. 2, 3, 4 have been reconstructed and as a result, they meet all requirements and needs. As part of the reconstruction, the aspiration systems of blast furnaces were modernized as well. And the third major project is devoted to redesigned rolling redistribution with the construction of a new etch line NTA-4.
It is also worth to admit that during 2015-2016 measures aimed at reducing water consumption and reducing discharges were implemented at several factories. Currently, the implementation of environmental projects continues and gains momentum. The construction of a pumping station for the return of water coming from the plant is being completed as well. Such a program will reduce the intake of fresh industrial water and reuse more than 5 million cubic meters of water in production.
Zaporizhstal is the first industrial enterprises that has introduced a modern information and dispatch system for railway transport while improving the visualization system. The system of visualization and monitoring of technological processes is successfully functioning at the enterprise.
In the priority of the ecological modernization of the plant, to reduce the share of emissions that have a negative impact on the environment. Such emissions include dust, sulfurous anhydride (SO2), and other chemicals.
By the way, Zaporizhstal is moving to new versions of international management system standards within the framework of the Integrated Management System.
According to the company's press release, the standard on environmental management systems was updated to ISO 14001: 2015, and on quality management – to ISO 9001: 2015. In addition, the Occupational Safety and Health Management Standard OHSAS 18001 has been replaced by a more advanced ISO 45001 standard.
As you can see, one of the most powerful enterprises whose industrial products are famous for its high-quality and greatness.
