Toyota’s Achieved Goal: Meet the First 1000-HP 2020 Supra Engine

Finally, after months of intensive design work, Stephan Papadakis, Toyota tuner has managed to realize his ambitious idea. Earlier in 2019, he made up his mind to set out this year with the target of developing a grandiose 1000 horsepower from the latest 2020 Supra engine. For Stephan, it was a challenge because unlike every Supra model before that, as a rule, the engine was taken from BMW, not Toyota. So, let’s see how that turned out.

Designing the Supra Engine for the Dyno Test
Coming back to the topic of the paper, it should be mentioned that the design procedure was implemented in two steps. The first one was identified as reassembling the engine while the second one was achieved after overcoming a few obstacles. Go on reading to reveal both ones.
In September 2019, Stephan Papadakis has hit the automotive world with his modified B58 engine. What and why was changed in this engine? Stephan decided to reassemble the engine because he wanted to take it to the dyno testing. Any car should be taken to dyno testing in order to find out how much power it is actually getting to the wheels. Additionally, it was planned that the B58 engine could serve as a sample to understand what should be done to make an engine demonstrating 1000 horsepower.
So, the three-liter B58 engine has received a bunch of new components that involve the following:
· One-off intake manifold made of aluminum (which was designed by the Mountune and 3D-printing method). The manifold will allow Papadakis to change the stock water-to-air intercooler for an air-to-air unit, and add port fuel injection;
· Forged pistons;
· A custom exhaust manifold with the goal to place the larger turbocharger.
Additionally, the B58 engine was modified from direct to port fuel injection. It was not a simple thing to mount this engine model to use it during the dyno testing. One of the reasons is that he had to construct a few adapter plates to guarantee every part would perfectly mount up in accordance with the input shaft of the dyno.
Papadakis also had the task to develop specific wiring so that the B58 engine would successfully function on a standalone electronic control unit (or ECU) without having the rest of the automobile present.
Obstacles While Designing an Ideal 1000 Horsepower
The process of making the B58 engine a device with 1000 horsepower was not realized without obstacles. Before Stephan got into high boost, he had to replace the rear main seal because it started to leak. That was the first incident. The second one involves the thing that fluid started to flow from the air conditioning zone. As far as it was fixed, Stephan Papadakis began to push the B58 engine slightly further.
Here, a new problem occurred. During that procedure, one of the direct injectors began to melt (unused ones) and led to sparks to plug out the top of the head. So, Stephan decided to remove the head at all. Instead, he installed a few custom plugs in the place where the direct injectors are located. This was the ideal solution! He finally reached the goal and was lucky to push the B58 engine to one thousand thirty-three (!) horsepower. This exceeded his expectations to get at least one thousand horsepower! The engine also got nine hundred eight ft. regarding torque on forty-two psi of boost.
Data Got During the Dyno Testing
Now, let’s come to the most interesting part of this development. We mean the full picture of the results received during the dyno testing of 2020 Toyota Supra with an improved 1000 horsepower engine. Most probably, you are will get surprised.
According to Toyota’s official statement, the 2020 Supra’s three-liter turbocharges engine (inline-six) is able to produce three hundred thirty-five hp. and three hundred sixty-five ft. of torque. However, reality differs a bit.
During the dyno testing that took place at World Motorsports in Torrance, California, it turned out that the experts’ dynamometer came up with some different data. The difference was obvious, especially for peak torque.
In reality, Toyota Supra with the new engine demonstrated three hundred thirty-two hp. and three hundred eighty-seven ft. (pleasantly unpredicted, agree?) to the rear wheels during the dyno testing. The data was fixed using a Mustang eddy-current chassis dynamometer.
The last was equipped with a super powerful ventilator that is capable of giving realistic chilled air to the car’s radiators which simulated a real-world practice.
To conduct the testing, the experts ran Toyota Supra in sixths gear. They had to choose this very gear level because the transmission ratio as of 1.00 to 1 is considered the most efficient.
So, the dynamometer read another horsepower number that was claimed by Toyota. However, the torque figure was significantly higher than it was previously mentioned by Toyota representatives.
Moreover, the data promised by Toyota were taken at the crank. What does this mean? The numbers received via that method don’t take into accountant both hydraulic and frictional losses that take place in the differential and transmission.
The traditional approach presupposes that these could constitute approximately fifteen percent for a driveline (like it occurred with the Supra model) which predicts the Supra was performing three hundred ninety hp. and four hundred fifty-five ft. at the crank.
Unfortunately, people may only guess regarding the reasons why such discrepancies have taken place during the dyno testing. It would be fair to mention that this very 1000-HP 2020 Supra Engine is a preproduction engine version. In 2020 we expect to have a more properly, partially hand-constructed engine. Ok, this engine model might lack the very latest level of calibration.
It just means that Stephan Papadakis has made a titanic effort to produce extremely impressive performance indicators in hopes of making the 2020 Supra model one of the most sellable automobiles in this category.
Currently, Toyota’s opponent, the 2020 BMW Z4 claims to receive more power out of this same B58 engine, delivering three hundred eighty-two hp. So, there is always room to grow. Most probably, in 2020, the audience will focus on the bright competition between Toyota and BMW regarding the performance of the B58 engine in their automobiles.
