The Most Fascinating Infrastructure Projects in the World
The world is full of incredibly huge projects that are being built right in front of your face. For example, there is a brilliant bridge between three Chinese cities ⏤ Macau, Zhuhai, and Hong Kong. Or even Google that is about to build its smart city. These and other initiatives show how investing billions in simple things like roads and Internet access can make people's lives better. Below we would like to share the most fascinating infrastructure projects in the world with you.
The Bridge “La Rivière des Galets”
Reunion is a French overseas department on an island in the Indian Ocean. Its two largest cities are connected by a single motorway, and almost 70,000 cars cross the Gale River daily via two bridges. One of them is concrete, which goes south to Saint-Paul, and another is metal, which flows in the opposite direction to Saint-Paul-Deni. These bottlenecks cause huge traffic jams. Besides, the age of the metal bridge constructed in the 1950s creates safety problems. Especially it refers to natural disasters when there is a likelihood of cyclones.
Therefore, it was decided to build a new bridge, with three lanes in each direction, pedestrian and bicycle paths. The peculiarity of this project is that a new bridge will be built between the two existing ones, which requires high coordination of different specialties. Moreover, the cranes involved in the construction should be located directly in the riverbed, which turns into a rapid stream during the rainy season. Therefore, the most accurate planning of the construction process is necessary to keep up with the dry season.
When designing this project, BIM processes and intelligent 3D models were taken into consideration by Colas specialists. By the way, the coordination, collaboration, and construction planning of ongoing project is carried out using these models as the basis. The bridge itself was modeled by means of Revit, Civil 3D platform was applied to excavation and access roads. During design, these models were combined into Navisworks for cost estimation, coordination, and collision detection.
The drones were used to study the river bed, the data from which were processed in ReCap to obtain a three-dimensional point cloud. An accurate digital terrain model built in Civil 3D helped Colas design the footing foundations, organize water drainage and optimize excavation work more accurately. Besides, photography was carried out during the construction process to monitor the progress of work and track changes in the state of the riverbed due to rains.
The Bridge Between Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau
In mid-2018, after eight years of construction, China opened the world's longest bridge over the sea. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge is a project consisting of bridges and underwater tunnels. It crosses the Pearl River Delta, as well as access ramps and checkpoints.
Bridges and tunnels connect the largest cities in the region. According to the Telegraph , the project consists of a 35 km bridge and a 6.7 km long tunnel. It cost $ 120 billion and reduced travel time between Hong Kong and Zhuhai from three hours to 30 minutes.
Railway Between Xiangyang, Wuhan, and Shiyan
This is a project of the high-speed railroad line between the Chinese cities of Wuhan and Shiyan, separated by mountains, many rivers, and lakes. On this project, the engineers of China Railway Shiyan Survey and Design Group seem to have applied all the solutions from the Autodesk portfolio ⏤ from Vault, which was chosen as a platform for managing engineering data, InfraWorks and Civil 3D bundles to choose the optimal route and axis design, Revit and Inventor for the design of artificial structure, before virtual reality technology and 3D printing, and the use of BIM360 to coordinate the specialists who designed the stations.
The team believes that the success of this project, which was one of the first railway projects in China fully implemented using BIM technology, will serve as a guide for other similar projects in the country. And they have impressive results confirming this belief. For example, six tunnels and 10 bridges were designed in just 1.5 month. The accuracy and quality of the project made it possible to use prefabricated structures for the construction of a railway station widely, accelerating the installation of key parts of equipment by 60%.
According to IT Project Manager, Hua Xie, the team of engineers used the tools from the AEC collection to speed up the execution of design tasks, which contributed to increasing the efficiency of tunnel and bridge design.
Gotthard Automobile Tunnel is one of the longest in the world, its length is 17 km. An underground motorway under the Lepontine Alps was laid to connect two large cantons ⏤ Uri and Ticino.
The construction of the tunnel began in 1969 and lasted 11 years. It is comfortable for traveling and has a well-thought-out lighting system. A clear minus is only one lane in each direction.
The tunnel can be moved at a maximum speed of 80 km/h. Drivers are advised to maintain a distance of at least 150 meters. The main danger for motorists is a large flow of freight transport.
Metro Line Atakoy-Ikitelli
The metro line M9 Atakoy-Ikitelli is the second metro project in Turkey, the competition for which included BIM requirements. The first one was also carried out with the participation of Prota Engineering and received the AEC Excellence Award last year.
Prota created 4D tunnel models using data from various platforms, including Revit, AutoCAD, and Civil 3D in Navisworks. The 4D simulation in Navisworks presented the state of the ground and other parameters needed for tunneling. Engineers used different types of analysis on this complex project, including traffic modeling in InfraWorks to analyze the traffic situation around the stations. Moreover, they used Autodesk CFD to simulate the spread of smoke in the case of a fire. By the way, the Autodesk platform was also used in the British Crossrail project ⏤ the construction that connects the outer suburbs of London to the east as well as western parts of the city.
An important decision was to use BIM 360 Docs as a platform for exchanging information. Before that, the company had no such experience. This step satisfied expectations: BIM 360 Docs ensured the coordinated work of three distributed project teams located in Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir. According to Prota Engineering, the main positive effect is that at the design stage, BIM helped to reduce decision-making time, increase productivity and help optimize purchases.
Reconstruction of the Panama Canal
From 2011 to 2016, a grand reconstruction of the Panama Canal was underway ⏤ an expansion that doubled its throughput. A grand five-year construction can be seen in just two minutes.
The Panama Canal, with a length of 77 km, connects the Panama Gulf of the Pacific Ocean with the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Unlike the Suez Canal, it is not laid along its entire length at sea level: ships rise and fall using locks and pass through a freshwater channel. More about the Panama Canal can be found in Britannica article.
