Airbus’s Drone Zephyr S: Record 14-Day Trip in the Air and No Single Landing

Making Possible Non-Stop Flights with Exciting Features of the Drone

According to the press release on the company’s official website, Zephyr S spent in the air fourteen days twenty-two minutes and eight seconds.

This was the most long-time flight in the world. During this trip, all the capabilities of the system were confirmed, and all the engineering tasks were achieved. The first test flight of an improved model of an unmanned aerial vehicle Zephyr S set a new world record for the duration of a non-stop flight.

Airbus Defense & Space describes Zephyr S as a pseudo-satellite because in an overview of the configurations of this drone it is mentioned that it is not exactly a plane type, but not quite a satellite as well. In reality, the construction combines the best features of both categories: Zephyr S drone has the flexibility of the drone and the duration of the satellite. This tandem is considered one of those to guarantee the success of non-stop flights.

Multi-Field Application

As being informed by the engineering team, the drone may be implemented in various industries: starting from confidential military intelligence to observation of potential locations of natural as well as man-made disasters, including also supervision on the Earth’s atmosphere. Moreover, Airbus’s creation is able to supervise a border area, marine connections, and other area types for various targets.

Zephyr S has quite a useful feature as of focusing on a concrete location, even if its area obtains hundreds of kilometers. At the same time, the drone will be able to maintain satellite communication of high quality and provide clear, detailed imagery for a long period without any system interruptions.

As it was already mentioned, the wingspan of the Zephyr S reaches twenty-five meters with the total weight as of seventy-five kilograms. At the same time, according to the developers’ reports, Zephyr S is capable of carrying a load that practically exceeds their own weight five (!) times.

The maximum flight height of Airbus’s development is twenty-one thousand meters. Taking into account the feature, a team of engineers who are working hard to optimize the existing characteristics of the drone, officially informed that they plan to bring the drone’s flight time to at least one hundred days.

It is worth mentioning that all the testing was carried out with the overall support of the UK. They plan to be the first country in the world to adopt this creation for some purposes. The next departure of Zephyr S is planned from the Wyndham summer field in Western Australia. The exact date of departure is not known yet.
